Gingivectomy, also known as pocket reduction surgery or flap surgery, is a procedure which removes bacteria and tartar from the roots of your teeth. At any given time, there are dozens of different strains of bacteria in your mouth. These bacteria produce acids which lead to the development of periodontal disease. By performing a gingivectomy, our periodontists can eliminate these bacteria and reduce inflammation to save your gums and teeth.
Gingivectomies work by:
- Reducing bacterial spread
- Halting bone loss
- Facilitating better home care
Prior to your gingivectomy, our periodontists and team will perform a thorough examination and take X-rays. When you receive your treatment, we will administer a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort, and then gently pull back your gums from your teeth. We will remove the bacteria and calculus in your mouth through scaling and root planing and administer an antimicrobial liquid to kill any remaining bacteria in the area, and to encourage your gums to heal. Your gums will then be sutured back into place for 5-10 days to prevent shifting during the healing process.
You can expect to experience sensitivity in your gums and teeth following a gingivectomy. You should see a reduction in the depth of your periodontal pockets, and an improvement in the health of your teeth and gums after several weeks.
